Chanhassen Dinner Theater Video People love dinner theater, the idea of enjoying a meal while seeing a show has been around since the first dinner theater opened in 1962. 40 year old Chanhassen dinner theater started only a few years after the first and continues to entertain people in 2008. Through the year top notch plays are hosted there. There are multiple spaces in the theater. The 90,000 square foot complex boasts multiple theaters and dining rooms. Chanhassen’s biggest show space is the Main Dinner Theater. The capacity is 541 people. Sure there are larger theaters but this one has booths and tables where dinner is served. There’s the Playhouse Theater, a very small space, and the Fireside Theater where patrons see a show after eating in a different dining space. Similar to a stadium luxury box, the Director’s Room overlooks the Main Dinner Theater . Private parties take place in the Main Dinner Theater where people can also watch the play from above the room. Weddings are frequently held in the many dining facilities, and people love to visit the lounge and pub. There’s a unique history to the Playhouse Theater too. In 1971 a play called “I Do! I Do!” opened in that room. It ran until 1993. To top off 22 years of entertaining there, the play boasted the same cast from opening day to the last curtain call. Chanhassen built it’s fame on that play with 700,000 total viewers, 125 watching at a time. Chanhassen presented some of the most popular plays over the years. From May of 2003 to June of 2004 Sound of Music played a repeat performance there. Also shown have been Guys and Dolls, My Fair Lady, and a lot more. These all played in the main theater. Many more have also been shown in the smaller rooms, such as On Golden Pond and Dial M For Murder. Every size and level of show plays at Chanhassen. Over time there’s been something for everyone, which may explain why the theater remains a popular attraction in the Twin Cities.
